Nokia Lumia 820 Vs Samsung Ativ S:
powerhouse portables clash

The Samsung Ativ S pre-order has begun at just under £400 for this Windows Phone 8 device but how does it compare against the mainstream Nokia Lumia 820? Find out as we put powerhosue mid-range portables to the stat clash.

Windows Phone 8 looks set to be made official later this month, so we hope to start seeing devices such as the Nokia Lumia 820 and Samsung Ativ S begin to appear shortly afterwards. The Samsung Ativ S may dwarf the Nokia Lumia 820 in screen size terms, 4.8-inch to 4.3-inch respectively but where Nokia clearly has the edge is in the use of the super-sensitive touchscreen, so you can access the screen with a gloved hand, a fingernail or even a pen nib, something you won’t find from any other smartphone on the market.

When it comes to performance, they both share the same core tech specs. So, you’ll find a 1.5GHz dual-core processor supported by 1GB of RAM powering both the Nokia Lumia 820 and Samsung Ativ S. This is more than enough to give your new Windows Phone 8 smartphone plenty of operating speed.

The Samsung Ativ S has a clear advantage when it comes to storage, packing in 32GB of internal memory, there may also be a budget 16GB version in the offering. The Nokia Lumia 820 by contrast has 8GB of internal storage but as both sport a microSD card slot you can add a further 32GB to the mix.

The Samsung Ativ S clearly has the edge in terms of size and weight and even manages to pack in a larger size battery, but you won’t find wireless charging like that offered by the Nokia Lumia 820 via interchangeable shell.

Nokia clearly has a better strategy when it comes to offering the user more. Nokia location-based services are an integral part of the Windows Phone 8 experience, so even the Samsung can now have a better mapping experience, but Nokia is going further with new enhanced Nokia Maps, Nokia Transport and Nokia City Lens features that make the mapping experience on the Nokia Lumia 820 simply miles ahead of the opposition.
